       The Story

Schedule

7:10 a.m. Breakfast
Academy Prep provides a healthful breakfast each morning, so each day begins with breakfast at school. Students learn that eating a good breakfast is important because it gives the body the fuel it needs to start the day and helps the mind to focus on the important work ahead.

7:30 a.m. Convocation

Includes prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, discussion of what we are doing right and wrong as a school, as well as of upcoming events, acknowledge students who successfully and responsibly completed all their tasks the previous day, and a reading—usually by the Head of School.

7:40 a.m. to 2:25 p.m.

Classwork

English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Spanish, Art, Music, Drama, and Physical Education.

11:05 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. Lunch and recess
As all students qualify for the Federal Lunch Program to be considered for admission, Academy Prep provides a hot lunch each day for the students. Lunch is also a time to unwind with friends and "recharge" for the long hours ahead.

2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tutoring / Cleaning

Students alternate between a supplemental tutoring period in English and Mathematics with their teachers and a campus cleaning period. Each is followed by supervised reading or recess.

3:50 to 4:40 After School Activity Period

Required After School Activity

All students are required to participate in the following extracurricular programs: Dance, Karate, Chess, and “Owning Up,” a YMCA-sponsored project that works with our girls and boys on issues related to their coming adolescence.

5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday to Thursday
Required Evening Study

All students not maintaining As and Bs on all graded courses are required to stay for study hall in order to help complete their homework (note: a clear indication that we do not suffer from grade inflation at Academy Prep is that only 3 of our 24 students are exempt from study hall due to high grades).

First and Third Saturday of each month

Required Saturday Activity

Field trips designed to supplement our classroom instruction: Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, the Tampa Public Library, the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, the Lowry Park Zoo (where we painted a 150-foot mural at the Zoo School), Fort DeSoto State Park, Dali Museum, The International Museum in St. Petersburg, The Florida Aquarium, Hillsborough River State Park, and Mac Dill Air Force Base, and many other opportunities.
