Prep Students Win Regional Science Fair Awards!
On January 14, 2009 Academy Prep held its
annual science fair. All students were required to complete
a science fair project. The objective of this project was
to provide every child hands-on experience using the scientific
method. School wide, the top three projects were completed
by:
- Aleah Black titled "Stains, Stains, Go Away"
- Markee Davis titled "Water Purification"
- Craig Bowman and Adrian Snead titled "Paper
Chromatography of Skittles"
These students did an excellent job researching, conducting,
and explaining their experiments. The judges were extremely
impressed.
For the first time Academy Prep competed in the Pinellas Regional
Science and Engineering Fair. The fair was a day-long event
held at Seminole Middle School. The students did an outstanding
job representing themselves, their families and Academy Prep.
Excitingly, Markee, Craig and Adrian were recognized with awards
in their respective divisions. At an awards ceremony at Largo
High School Markee Davis was awarded 4th place in the Environmental
Science division. Craig Bowman and Adrian Snead were awarded
3rd place in the Chemistry division. We are very proud of their
efforts and look forward to next year's competition. |

Prep Places In The Top 3 For Both Girls' And Boys' Basketball
Tournaments
Girls
The Academy Prep Girls' Basketball Team took second place
in the 2009 St. Pete Christian Basketball Tournament. In the
opening round, the girls defeated St. Raphael's Catholic School.
The semifinal round matched the girls against a tough St.
Pete Christian squad, who had previously defeated the Lady
Eagles. The AP girls won a physical game by three points,
thanks in part to outstanding defensive efforts by Shaniqua
Mitchell and Sanobia Turner, and clutch late-game free throws
from Bryanna Franklin and Tianah Alvarado. The Lady Eagles
came up short in the final against a talented St. Paul's team
to take second place in the tournament. Way to go girls!
Boys
In the opening round of the 2009 St. Pete Christian Basketball
Tournament, the boys lost a tough game to eventual champion
Skycrest Christian. However, the boys recovered to win three
straight games and bring home the third place trophy. The
team defeated Independent Day School, St. Raphael's, and host
St. Pete Christian to finish the season on a high note. The
boys were led by outstanding offensive efforts from Craig
Bowman, Todd Macon, and Will Anderson. In addition, the team
worked hard and hustled to execute Coach Angie Hall's intense
pressure defense. Great
job guys! |

Once
again, Academy Prep is a home-town youth non-profit supported by
the Transitions PGA Golf Tournament. Over 65 students,
families, and staff volunteered for the Pro Am with students as
team standard bearers as well as hosting the 17th hole caddy duties.
We thank the Copperheads, the golf tournament’s leadership
and staff, for their ongoing support of Academy Prep students for
the past decade! Transitions Optical provided eye exams for all
Academy Prep students and glasses for over 50 of our students.
A special thanks to Dex Imaging and the Sembler family

NFL
Alumni Arlo Henderson Inspiring Students at Academy Prep
December 18, 2008 The Weekly Challenger
St. Petersburg - Many people find tremendous satisfaction
volunteering for a cause they care about. That satisfaction is what
NFL Alumni Arlo Henderson found in sharing his life experiences
with the boys and girls at Academy Prep Center of St. Petersburg.
Henderson spoke to the youth regarding the importance of having
goals, a good attitude, and being prepared for opportunities that
will come their way. "Growing up requires you to try harder,"
Henderson said.
Academy Prep began in 1997 with boys in fifth and sixth grades,
and in the summer of 2000, with the success of its program for boys,
launched its program for girls beginning with grade five. During
the middle school years, a most formative time in a young life,
we often make decisions that can impact a lifetime. In an overcrowded
classroom situation, there's little time to guide the child in trouble
and instill in him a love of learning. Without that guidance, however,
many inner city youth run the risk of becoming statistics - heading
toward failure and dropping out of the education system all together.
Many are on the brink of being "written off" by the very
organizations designed to prepare them for a productive. Academy
Prep is in the business of identifying these children, changing
lives and interrupting the cycle that fuels poverty. It's unrealistic
to expect a middle school student to make tough decisions about
life - working hard in school, going to college, preparing for a
career, being a model citizen - without intensive support and guidance
from a "community" of caring adults.
That's where Academy Prep comes in for students.
Children whose previous testing and school performance show that
they have the ability and desire to learn are the focus of Academy
Prep's program. By providing a safe environment and a rigorous academic
program driven by high expectations, we encourage them to grow in
self-confidence and to expand their horizons. The St. Petersburg
program now serves boys and girls in grades five through eight and
currently supports graduates in high schools and colleges locally
and around the nation. For additional information contact Jessica

8Th
Grade Girls Embark On A World Tour- in just
two weeks! Using the research they compiled on a nation of
their choice, students committed to a lengthy process of composing
and then publishing a variety of informative passages.
Their well-developed responses answered critical questions
on a range of interesting topics including economy, geography,
politics, and national character. Along with these short and
extended responses, students incorporated relevant statistics
and stunning photographs of landscape, figureheads, and festivals.
Don’t miss your chance to visit this proud showcase
of Academy Prep’s writing talent! Feel free to see the
exhibit housed in Room 8! |

 Up,
Up and Away!
The 8th grade boys of Ms. DiRosa’s Science class are
about to take off…with rockets, that is. The gentlemen
were all taking part in a science experiment titled “Fire
Arrows-Air Rockets” that involved making rockets and
watching them take flight.
The experiment was all part of the “Hands On, Minds
On” approach that the science teachers at Academy Prep
St. Petersburg have taken with their students. As part of
the “hands-on, minds-on” approach to science the
students applied some of the basic principles and physics
of rocket design to create their own rocket and altiscope.
Each pair of students were challenged to design and create
a rocket out of the provided materials (plastic tube, foam,
toothpicks, and note cards) that would fly the highest and
be the most accurate.
The students had a great time challenging their selves and
having fun making cool rockets, that now, they can make at
home to show the neighborhood kids!

Prep Runs Crime Out Of Our Neighborhoods

Saturday, September 20th 2008 was a great day for Academy
Prep! Academy Prep’s students and teachers along with
some of the teachers took part in the Urban League’s
24th annual Crime Prevention 5K* Run and Festival in the Park.
The event is used to highlight social ills caused by violence
and crime in our community. Academy Prep ran for the cause
of reducing crime and to improve relationships between law
enforcement and the community, who were both in heavy attendance. |
|
5th graders Shacobi Anderson, Mykeal Conyers, Andrew Gaona
and Joshua Snead made Academy Prep very proud by running the
entire 5k (3.1 miles) with fervor and determination, with
two of our students even placing in the top 3 of their age
and gender group. AP Teacher Ms. Brittany Lash ran until every
student completed their race.
Along with AP teachers Christina Cummings and Jennifer Ubiera,
Joshua Snead and Shacobi Anderson received top medals for
the run. Shacobi, who despite her health conditions, firmly
pressed on to complete the race. As guest of honor Melanie
Peters, Elite Runner (2008 Beijing Olympic qualifier) held
her hand as she ran across the finish line. Shacobi was the
recipient of a savings bond from SunTrust Bank, an ardent
supporter of Academy Prep.
Thank you to the Urban League for providing
a free 5k run and community festival in the park! |

Learning Project Over
the summer session, our 8th grade students began a very special
project that explored the value of service. Through a grant
provided by the Nativity Miguel Network, our 8th graders planned
and implemented a two fold Service Learning Project. The first
piece of the project was an in-house sports camp that we offered
free of charge to 3rd through 5th graders in our local community.
These camps lasted an hour a day for each of the three weeks
of our summer program. The first week we offered a boys basketball
camp. The second week we offered a girl’s basketball
camp, and lastly we offered a baseball camp. These camps were
planned and implemented by our 8th grade students, with help
from Mr. Barnes our Athletic Director. The students stayed
after school everyday and gave their time to plan each day’s
activities, as well as run the camps. They were a great success,
and we are very pleased to have been able to offer this service
to our community. (Read

Academy Prep Students Read to Governor Crist
As part of the Pinellas Science Center's celebration of Black
History Month, Academy Prep's fifth graders read excerpts from
Follow the Drinking Gourd to Governor Charlie Crist.
The governor explained that "drinking gourd" was the
code name for the big Dipper constellation which contained Polaris,
the North Star that guided slaves to Freedom in the via the
Underground Railroad. He gave each student a personalized, signed
copy of the book.
Governor Crist toured the African American History exhibit at
the Science Center with the students and was presented with
a pin in the shape of Academy Prep's symbol - an oak tree with
a star. 5th grader Jacquetta Sorey explained that the tree symbolizes
strength and the star is a constant reminder to students to
reach for excellence.
