The
Joan Fortune Campus of Academy Prep sits placidly among old oak trees
on 2.4 acres of land.
The campus, located in St. Petersburg's "Midtown", opened
with boys in grades 5 and 6, adding a new grade each year and eventually
expanding to serve middle school girls. Campus facilities grew in
step with the program, constructing a building each year for the
first 4 years.
he campus’ four buildings serve boys and girls in grades
5 through 8, and up to 7 full-time AmeriCorps volunteer teachers
in beautiful apartments.

The
boys' classroom building was built in 1997 and features 4 classrooms
such as the Jesse Owens 8th grade boys' room, sponsored by Raymond
James. The central administration building followed in 1998 and houses
the Zora Neale Hurston Library, sponsored by the St. Petersburg Times;
the Vyrle Davis Commons Room, sponsored by the Rotary Club of St.
Petersburg; as well as the Justice Thurgood Marshall administrative
offices, sponsored by Northern Trust Bank.

In
1999, the girls' building was constructed to make way for the expansion
of the program to include young ladies, educated in classrooms sponsored
by Raymond James. |

In
2000, Academy Prep opened its fourth building, housing the new Jacob
Lawrence Art and Science Lab, office space, storage areas, and the
new W.E.B. DuBois Computer Lab, sponsored by Tech Data.

| One
of the more significant aspects of each building on campus is the
second story--designed as apartments where full-time AmeriCorps
volunteer teachers live on campus. Beall's Department Stores has
named the campus in St. Petersburg for founder, Joan Fortune.
The Joan Fortune Campus currently has room for 9 full-time AmeriCorps
volunteers to live on campus in bright, modern apartments.
