Prep of St. Petersburg Gears Up For Standardized Testing
For the first time, students at Academy Prep of St.
Petersburg will take the Stanford 10, a norm-referenced, standardized
test that is aligned with the Florida teaching benchmarks. A norm,
of course, is a typical level of performance for a particular group.
What this means is that your child’s score will be compared
with students across the country who have taken the test. The process
will determine whether the score is above, below, or around the average
for that group.
Essentially, the Stanford 10 measures the overall achievement of
students in six content areas that are grade-level appropriate.
There are two math sections, two language arts sections, one science
area and one social studies area. Students’ listening skills
will be tested as well. During the listening section, a teacher
will read the content aloud and students must pay close attention
in order to correctly answer the questions that follow.
The Stanford 10 is a lengthy test, totaling five hours and 10 minutes.
It will be administered over a three day period, from March 9—11,
and students will have the appropriate breaks between sections.
A practice test will be administered beforehand to prepare students
for the real one.
We will receive the results of the test in approximately three
weeks, and it will be included on your child’s permanent school
record.
While this is a very important test, it will not be the sole marker
of your child’s progress at Academy Prep. We do not want students
to feel stressed or fearful about the test. It is not a test they
can study for ahead of time because it measures the student’s
achievement in various subject areas, such as science or American
history.
Students will take the test twice each academic year, in spring
and fall.
Parents, please ensure that your children get a good night’s
sleep each night before the test, have a hearty breakfast, and arrive
at school on time. We need to begin testing school wide, in unison,
at an appointed time. We cannot accommodate any latecomers, and
please, if at all possible, avoid any absences on those dates. |
