Academy Prep, Tampa hosted its annual Alumni Reunion on August 16, 2008. 24 of APCT's 38 Graduates attended this annual gathering. APCT would like to thank all of it's graduates for their overwhelming show of support and appreciation for Academy Prep, it's faculty and staff, and it's fellow graduates. Academy Prep Foundation would like to thank all of the parent volunteers who helped make the reunion such a special day for such a wonderful group of young people.

And, Academy Prep Foundation would like to thank Sr. Anne Dougherty, Graduate Support Counselor, for her coordination of this event. We hope to see all of the graduates back in Tampa in the summer of 2009!!!

2006 Academy Prep Graduate, Jerica Coley, was honored as the Female Student Athlete of the Year by the Florida Chapter of First Serve.

Jerica Coley, 16, a rising junior at St. Petersburg Catholic and the St. Petersburg Tennis Center, won the inaugural First Serve National Student Athlete Competition. Coley was recognized for her achievements in tennis and the classroom and was extended an invitation from the national board of directors to be the first member of its National Honor Society.

"Jerica is a model for all young people and has set high standards for the future," said Trey Buchholz, founder and CEO of the First Serve not-for-profit organization.

"Her development on the tennis courts and in the classroom is outstanding," he said. "Her grades included 15 As and one B this year, and in five tennis tournaments, she won eight of 12 matches. It seems when Jerica puts her mind to it, she can do anything."

Buchholz announced a final award in recognition of Coley's achievement: a trip to New York during the U.S. Open Championships for her and her parents. "This is just a real honor for me to receive this award and I feel very privileged to have gotten it," said Coley. "I was real excited when I knew I was in the lead and, once I got there, I wanted to stay in first."

First Serve combines the teaching of tennis skills with life skills and offers after-school tutoring opportunities. Its mission includes empowering youth with skills, values and experiences needed to be responsible, productive and successful in life.

• Several local players recently competed in the North Florida Designated tournament in Tallahassee, and two made the finals. Agatha Ambrozy of Pasadena went to the final in the girls 14 singles before losing to Brittany Lindl 6-4, 6-1. Palm Harbor's Anastasia Nefedova won the girls 12 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ashley Bongart in the final. There were 361 players registered in the tournament.

First Graduating Class!

On May 17th, 2007 the first graduating students of the Academy Prep Center of Tampa received their diplomas. Mayor Pam Iorio delivered the commencement address in the auditorium, filled with families, Board of Trustee members, student mentors, volunteers and supporters. Students, wearing green gowns, entered the auditorium after the procession of Academy Prep faculty and staff.

Mr. Tamayo, our Head of School, welcomed all and the program began with our school pledge (click here to read) that concludes with the words We Are The Greatest. Inspiring messages were shared by Kristy Craig, representing the faculty, Pam Hooks, representing the administration, Paul Whiting, Sr., the Trustee President and Founder of Academy Prep Tampa (click here for speech), Sixta Rosenda and Dorraine Smith, parents of two of our graduates, and Derecia Timmons, the Valedictorian of the class (click here for valedictory address).

To the surprise of students, families and guests, a legacy film shared our inaugural class’s growth at Academy Prep and honored our daily statement during convocation to Work and Play Hard Like Champions.

Mayor Iorio and Graudates

Mayor Iorio delighted our graduates and guests with three great pieces of advice.

  1. You should run away as fast as you can from any person who questions why you work hard on your education.
  2. Nothing good happens after midnight.
  3. Believe in yourself and know that people believe in you.

Mayor Iorio closed by stating, “We see 18 extremely successful young people that we know will be the next doctors, engineers, architects, teachers and, perhaps, even a mayor. We believe in you and know that you will reach your goals and give back to your community like this school and your families have given to you.”

Our New Alumni Achieved Incredible Outcomes

Many of our students entered Academy Prep with academic ability below grade level. We are proud to report that our graduates are now scoring at the 10th - 12th grade level, some even at college level, in reading and math. These students also excel in debate, chess, karate, and the arts. We have seen them grow by mentoring younger Academy Prep students and conducting community service, such as visiting older adults at a nursing home, reading to Head Start youngsters, and stocking supplies at the local food bank.

These graduating 8th graders will attend - most on full scholarships - the following college preparatory schools and high schools.

What Happens When Students Become Academy Prep Alumni?

Once in the Academy Prep family, graduates always have home at Academy Prep. Immediately alums are immersed in our critical graduate support program. This initiative guides the students for the next 8 years through educational, career and financial decisions. Students are required to give service hours back to Academy Prep and attend regular educational and update meetings. Directed by Dr. Keturah Mills at the Academy Prep Foundation, Sister Anne Dougherty started this past summer as our Graduate Support Counselor.

Congratulations Students and Families!

"I feel like I have just graduated from Academy Prep," one mother shared after the ceremony with tears in her eyes.

We want to thank the families of our alumni for the incredible support they have provided to volunteer at the school and help their children reach the high expectations of Academy Prep.
